If you are shopping for an electric SUV in Southern California, two names come up fast: the 2026 Toyota bZ and the Tesla Model Y. They aim at the same buyer but take different approaches. Here is a straight comparison of how they stack up on price, range, charging, and ownership, so you can decide which one fits how you actually drive.

Price: where each one starts

The 2026 Toyota bZ starts around $34,900, which undercuts the Model Y's entry point. The 2026 Model Y lineup runs from roughly $39,990 for the Standard trim up to the high $50,000s for the Performance version. If your priority is getting into a well-equipped electric SUV for the lowest starting price, the bZ has the edge, while the Model Y lineup stretches higher for buyers who want more performance or the longer three-row Model Y L.

Range

Both deliver competitive range. The Toyota bZ offers up to an EPA-estimated 314 miles, while the Model Y ranges from about 321 miles on the Standard trim to roughly 357 miles depending on version and wheels. The Model Y edges ahead at the top of its range, but both comfortably clear 300 miles in their stronger configurations, which is more than enough for Southern California commuting and road trips alike. For most drivers, the day-to-day difference is small.

Charging: the old gap has closed

For years, Tesla's biggest advantage was the Supercharger network. That advantage has largely closed. The 2026 Toyota bZ uses the NACS charging port, which means it can plug into the same Tesla Supercharger network the Model Y uses, along with other public chargers. Both cars charge at home overnight and fast-charge on the road, and both now draw from the same broad charging network. Charging access is no longer a reason to pick one over the other.

Ownership and service

This is where the two brands feel most different. Toyota sells and services the bZ through a traditional dealer network, which means you have a local service department here in the San Gabriel Valley for maintenance, warranty work, and questions, with people you can talk to face to face. Tesla uses a more direct model built around mobile service and service centers, which some owners love and others find less convenient depending on location. The bZ also keeps physical controls for common functions, while the Model Y puts nearly everything on its central touchscreen, and its driver-assistance features now require a separate subscription. Toyota's long-standing reputation for reliability and its warranty coverage, including a long EV battery warranty, are also part of the ownership picture. None of this is about one being right; it is about which ownership style suits you.

Which one is right for you

Choose the Toyota bZ if you want a lower starting price, a local dealer and service department you can walk into, physical controls, and Toyota's reliability track record behind your EV. Choose the Model Y if you want the longest available range at the top of the range, Tesla's performance trims, an optional third row, and you prefer the all-in Tesla software experience. Both are strong electric SUVs, and both charge on the same network now, so the decision comes down to price, range priorities, and how you like to buy and service a car.
